MEF vocal awards were given through auditions that were judged by professionals in the field. The singers were then presented in concert, with orchestra, conducted by Richard Woitach of the Metropolitan Opera in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Later, when MEF returned to our founders’ original concept of instrumental concerts, each solo musician was and is currently presented with a grant.
During his tenure as MEF’s artistic director (1991–2012), the pianist/conductor Li Jian led The Orchestra of St. Luke’s to accompany these instrumentalists. More recently, MEF presented Eve Queler, founder and conductor of Opera Orchestra of New York, to showcase promising young singers whom she, as a competition judge, helped to discover. Mindful of our groundbreaking history over the past 85 years, MEF will keep looking ahead for innovative ways to provide young musicians with performance opportunities.
